Image description

The image shows a four-legged mammal, called a cat, small in size among felines, viewed from the side, looking to the left, with an elongated and rectangular body, small and square head and snout, round and large eyes, and short and triangular ears, with sharp tips and a long, thick, high, curved tail at the right, ending the body.

The cat has the body covered with thick and fine fur, being marked embossed.

The four limbs end in small, soft paws with cushions that help them in jumps and landings.

Additional information

The house cat, the domestic cat or the cat (Felis catus) is a mammal of the order of carnivores, the family Felidae, the subfamily Felinae. The cat has been living in close contact with human beings for at least 3500 years, being used by Egyptians to keep mice away. Despite the domestication, the cat has never lost the ability to live in the wild, where it forms colonies.

The cat is an independent animal. Unlike the dog, it walks and cleans itself. Meowing is the  vocalization of cats. Generally, the cat is a discrete animal. It can sometimes seek to be noticed meowing for hours, either to ask for food or to open the door, for example. Some cat breeds are noisier than others, such as Siamese.

The purr is produced since it is kitten and can be for pleasure or pain. An animal protection association has found that cats, after injuries or fractures, have five times less sequelae than dogs and recover much faster. Hence the hypothesis that they can heal themselves with the help of the purr.

According to a psychologist, “the cat purrs to heal itself or to relax when it is stressed.” ,,Studies show that this purr is made by low-frequency vibrations, and these vibrations interact with the human body and help release serotonin, the hormone of happiness. Thus, sleep improves, even the heart conditions have some improvement. ” (Bibliography 2)

Cats have always been mysterious creatures, sacred in many cultures. Most of its habits begin to be elucidated by science. Here are some examples:

A healthy domestic cat can reach speeds up to 31 kilometers per hour, but can’t maintain sprinting speed for more than a minute.

Cats can jump 5 times the length of their body. The human equivalent of the cat’s ability to leap would be jumping the width of a swimming pool.

The sections of a cat’s brain responsible for understanding, filtering and managing emotions correspond to those of the human brain.

A cat has 244 bones in its body (unlike humans, which have 206). They have 60 vertebrae, and 20 of these bones are located in the tail, for flexibility.

Cats are most active in the morning and evening (dawn and twilight) because then there are the best hunting times.
