Reader App – Alpha Testing
What is the READER App?
Tactile Images READER is the mobile software (iOS) that facilitates the individual study of the tactile graphics downloaded from the Online LIBRARY or from the EDITOR.
It uses Interactive Augmented Reality algorithms to identify the position of the finger on the tactile graphics and to describe it. The app takes the place of a real person, of the specialist who has the role of contextualizing the spatial information received from the hands. That specialist who has kindness, time, and especially, limitless knowledge.
How does the App work?
The Tactile Images READER App is very easy to use, does not have any buttons and does not require human interaction. It can be downloaded from App Store free of charge.
The App works only when the phone is placed above tactile graphics. It plays the role of the person above the shoulder, explaining to the blind person what he has under his finger, thus creating a coherent representation of the drawing.
A tactile graphic is recognized through image knowledge algorithms and the user’s gesture is recognized through Artificial Intelligence algorithms. In this way, a blind person automatically receives details about the drawing.
What steps should you follow?
Downloading the App
- Download the App from App Store. (For now, the App is available only for iPhone, but in the future will be available for Android as well).
- Open the Tactile Images READER App.
- Enable camera access.
Exploring tactile graphics
- Place the mobile phone above a tactile graphic.
- If it recognizes the graphic, the App will verbalize its title.
- Explore the tactile graphic with your hand – when the App notices that you have placed your finger on an area that has a description, it will make a beeping sound. If you are interested in the description of that area, clench your fist while pointing with your index finger.
- Stop your index finger and the App will describe the corresponding area of the drawing. Voice-over will be activated after another 3 beeping sounds (beep, beep, beep).
- If you want to listen to the entire description of a tactile graphic, point your index finger next to the Braille-written title.
- In order to listen to general information about the tactile graphic, place your index finger next to the QR Code, placed in the top left corner.
What’s the future of the App?
The Tactile Images READER App is now in the Alpha stage. Because our goal is to enable independent learning for all the blind people in the world, it requires constant development. We wish that in the future, the App is available for Android as well, to reach as many people as possible – teachers, parents, partially sighted people and blind persons.
