Historical information

Born in the family of a former prosecutor, Ioan Lascu [Bibliography 1], she graduated from the Babeș Bolyai University Faculty of Law, Cluj Napoca in 1995, and between 1996-1997she was enrolled in an advanced studies program at the Law Faculty in the University of Sibiu. She began her prosecutor career in 1995at the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the County District of Sibiu. Since 2000 she occupied management positions at the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the County District of Sibiu: chief prosecutor of the Fight against Organized Crime and Corruption Bureau (2000-2002), chief prosecutor of the Fight against Organized Crime and Drugs (2002-2004), chief prosecutor of the Criminal Section (2004). Between 2004 and 2006, she was a prosecutor at the Sibiu Territorial Bureau– Direction for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism crimes which she led for a brief period of time until 2006. In the same year, she was appointed General Prosecutor of the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justiceand between 2012 and 2018 she was chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate. Known especially for her last position, Laura Codruța Kövesi was remarkable through the numerous investigations of Romanian politicians for corruption, being compared to the famous anti-mafia Italian prosecutor Antonio Di Petro. According to published information, she investigated in five years of activity 1200 Romanian public servants, of which more than 1000 have been arrested [Bibliography 3]. In a report regarding her chief prosecutor mandate at NAD between 2013 and July 2018, it is mentioned that while she was in office „68 dignitaries: 14 ministers and former ministers, 39 deputies, 14 senators and 1 member of the European Parliament” have been brought to trial, of which 37 have been convicted [Bibliography 4].
